Title of Research
Language and Literacy in Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Description of Research Area

My work is organized around three themes: (1) Characterizing intrinsic and extrinsic factors related to reading outcomes in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities; (2) Determining developmental trajectories of component reading skills for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and a range of speech ability; (3) Developing literacy assessments and interventions inclusive of children with limited speech ability. Currently, projects are centered around understanding developmental profiles of reading ability, and identifying the relationship between phonological awareness skills and reading outcomes in children with a intellectual and developmental disabilities in Pre-K through 3rd grades. These projects would provide a postdoc experience with data collection, analyses, and the opportunity to investigate unique questions of interest through secondary data analyses. Opportunity to compare results between etiology specific groups of children (e.g., children with Down syndrome, versus children with Autism spectrum disorder) exist.

Special Research & Career Skills

Opportunity to collaborate on the development of assessment tools specific to children with limited speech ability, collect pilot data on the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems to support reading development, and learn new data analysis techniques. Additionally, I would provide a postdoc with support for development of scientific writing skills, grant writing skills, and professional skills related to obtaining a faculty position.
