Description of Research Area

Freedom Schools serve children from low-income families through free summer camps that offer culturally relevant literacy instruction in addition to diverse enrichment activities focused on healthy living, arts and intergenerational mentoring. As the research director for North Florida Freedom Schools, we are able to work with multiple camp sites run in collaboration with local school districts and churches. Research areas include evaluating the cultural relevance and perceived effectiveness of programming offered during the camps. Additional areas for investigation include what college-age camp facilitators (who are primary teacher education majors) learn from the experience, as well as what PURPOSE fellows learn during their service learning research apprenticeships at Freedom Schools. PURPOSE (Partners United for Research Pathways Oriented to Social Justice in Education) fellows are diverse juniors and master’s students from FSU and FAMU who are participating in an Institute for Education Sciences Pathways training program intended to increase the diversity of the doctorate in education. Other research projects can be developed in collaboration with the stakeholders of NFFS and PURPOSE.

Special Research & Career Skills

Training will focus on conducting qualitative research in the field to address research questions determined in partnership with practitioners. How to build partnerships and share findings with stakeholders in productive ways will also be addressed.
