Title of Research
Group Dynamics and Emotions in Sport and Performance Contexts
Description of Research Area

Whereas a potential postdoctoral scholar and I would collaborate to develop the specific research focus, the work should fall within my general lines of research. These are first, collective emotions, that is the agreement in affective responding across individuals towards a specific event or object (von Schever & Ismer, 2013). Here, I am interested in documenting the existence of collective emotions and their task related as well as social consequences in sport and other performance settings, and exploring their origins and boundary factors. My second line of research focusses on social indispensability, that is, one group member’s performance being highly instrumental for group success (Wittchen et al., 2007). Here, I am interested in exploring which effects indispensability has on members’ cognitions, emotions, effort, and performance, and which factors determine if indispensability is an asset (e.g., enhancing effort and performance) or detriment (e.g., enhancing perceived pressure and anxiety).

Special Research & Career Skills

I would commit to training in (a) specific research skills, notably, relevant theories/bodies of literature, methods (e.g., experimentation), and analyses (e.g., multilevel modeling); and (b) general career skills, notably, professional development (cf. individual development plan, e.g., network-access, research and grant involvement, socialization) and personal independence and growth (e.g., leadership opportunities).
